A Christmas Q & A

I’ve not been very Christmassy over here on my blog this year – I do love Christmas but for some reason just don’t seem to write about it very much. But with only a day to go to the big day I thought I’d share a few Christmas fun facts about me and my family…

So without further ado, here we go…

What’s your favourite Christmas movie?

Die Hard! And yes, it is definitely a Christmas movie.

Have you ever had a white Christmas?

Only once. In 1999 I was working in the French Alps for the ski season. It was my first ever Christmas away from home and I was looking forward to skiiing on Christmas Day. Instead I slipped in the pub on Christmas Eve and spent most of Christmas Day in the doctor’s getting my ankle x-rayed and strapped up after I pulled my ligaments. There was definitely lots of snow though!

Where do you usually spend your holiday?

Until we moved back to the North West two and a half years ago I always spent Christmas at my parents’ house. I lived in Scotland for 13 years and always came home for Christmas (apart from Toby’s first Christmas which we had in our own house before travelling down on Boxing Day).  The first year after we moved back we had both sets of grandparents at our house for Christmas dinner. Last year we went to my mum and dad’s again for Christmas Day and this year we’ve got everyone at our house again.

What’s your favourite Christmas song?

Hmm, this is a hard one. I love most Christmas songs – despite being an atheist I do like a proper Christmas carol like Oh Come All Ye Faithful, or Once in Royal David’s City.

Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?

No. I seem to remember trying to introduce this in my family when I was a teenager but I was never allowed! We don’t have a full on Christmas Eve box for the boys like a lot of people seem to do these days, but I have started a tradition of new (and matching) pyjamas for Toby and Gabe to wear on Christmas Eve.

Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?

Yes. Mostly because I had to recite ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ at a school carol service when I was about 12 and I learnt them then…

Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!

What holiday traditions are you looking forward to this year?

I just love everything about Christmas – when I was growing up every Christmas was exactly the same and I loved it that way. I’m trying to keep some of those traditions alive with my boys – like putting out whisky and a mince pie for Father Christmas. We’ve started some new ones in the last few years too, like the Christmas Eve pyjamas, and always having croissants and pain au chocolat for breakfast on Christmas Day. This year we went on a Santa train for the first time too so I hope we can make that a new tradition too.

Is your Christmas tree real or fake?

Fake – I’m really allergic to real ones so it’s always going to be fake for us.

What’s your favourite holiday food/treat/sweet?

I always get a box of After Eights for Christmas off my mum – and as much as I love them I only ever eat them at Christmas.

Be honest. Do you prefer giving or receiving gifts?

Definitely giving. Especially since having children – and they’re both old enough to ‘get’ Christmas now and I can’t wait to see their excited faces on Christmas morning.

What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever received?

This is a tricky one. I think as a child it was probably something like my My Little Pony Grooming Parlour.

What’s your dream place to visit for the holiday season?

I’d love to spend Christmas in Vermont – we went to a ski resort there on our honeymoon but it was summer and I’d love to go back in winter. And the Americans do Christmas so well too.

Are you a pro present wrapper or do you fail miserably?

I’m definitely a pro-wrapper. I love wrapping and getting it all neat and perfect. I just finished the last of ours today.

What’s your most memorable Christmas memory?

I can’t really think of one Christmas memory – the Christmas spent in the French doctor’s office was pretty memorable but not really for any of the right reasons! As I mentioned before all my childhood Christmases were exactly the same so it’s hard to distinguish one from another, they were all fab!

What made you realise the truth about Christmas?

I have no idea! I mentioned in my post about getting our Christmas story straight that I thought I knew about Father Christmas from being about 5 or 6 but my brother reckons we were older than that before we stopped believing. I can definitely remember searching my mum and dad’s bedroom for presents when I was about 8 or 9 so I definitely must have known by then.

What makes the holidays special for you?

I love the break from routine and getting to spend time with my family without work and school runs, and all the other things we have to do the rest of the year.

And there we are – some Christmassy fun from me.

Merry Christmas everyone!
