Toby is three years old

Toby is three years old today. Can you believe it? My little tiny 6lb 10oz baby, who was only three months old when I started writing this blog, is three!

Baby Toby

This is the first time that he’s really understood about birthdays and so the first year we’ve bothered having presents wrapped and waiting for him in the morning. Of course, his favourite thing was the balloon though!

Birthday balloon

We only gave Toby a few small things today because we’re moving out of our house this week and won’t be in our new house for at least a week so we didn’t want to give him presents that would just need to be put straight into storage.

Opening presents

So anyway, what is Toby like at three years old? He’s funny and cheeky, polite for the most part, prone to crying when he doesn’t get his own way but rarely has a tantrum. He can count to 20 (if you ignore the fact he goes from 13 straight to 16). He knows his full name and can recognise the letter T for Toby. He still loves his muslin blankets and has four on the go at any one time and he still loves to suck his thumb, although we’ve started trying to get him to only have it at bedtime.

Sucking his thumb in a cushion house

He can name all the planets and will tell you that Venus is ‘berry berry hot’, Jupiter has got a big red spot and Saturn has got rings. He knows the names of at least five different dinosaurs and could probably tell you every single character in every program on CBeebies – which perhaps I shouldn’t be quite as proud of! He learns new words every day and we rarely have trouble understanding him these days. I love how I can have a proper conversation with him now, and some of the things he comes out with are hilarious.

He loves anything chocolate and always wants to eat some of my cake, even if he’s got his own. He eats most things, as long as he’s got mayonnaise to dip them in (he may have picked that one up from me!) and we seem to have mostly got over the fussy phase that I mentioned in his last update. He eats a lot and was 102 cm tall at the last measure and wears age 3-4 clothes but he still only weighs 2st 5lb so he’s only put on 2lb in the last six months.

Imaginative play at three years old
He loves playing outside, especially making giant bubbles, and he’s really starting to get into imaginative play at the moment; building things and making up stories about them. But he also loves playing games on his ‘tiny telly’ (which is actually my Kindle Fire). He would probably play on it all day if he could but we try to limit his time and make sure all the games are at least vaguely educational.

He sleeps in a single bed, and usually sleeps all night. He likes to have three stories at bedtime and fall asleep on my lap. He sometimes wakes up early but always stays in bed until ‘Mr Sun’ comes out on his Groclock at 7:20. Sometimes he sleeps later, it usually depends whether Gabe is being noisy and wakes him up. He doesn’t nap, except sometimes in the car, but if he does it’s a nightmare to try and get him to sleep at night.

He still wears nappies (cloth ones of course) and although he knows when he is doing a wee or poo he has absolutely no interest in using the potty or the toilet. I’m hoping we might have a breakthrough over the summer, although with all the changes coming with moving house I’m not going to push him if he doesn’t want to.

Toby and Gabe - best of friends

He loves his little brother, and is still the one person who is pretty much guaranteed to be able to make Gabe laugh, but he gets annoyed with him all the time and is still not keen on sharing his toys. We are seeing more moments of affection though and Toby even seems to have started babbling nonsense back to Gabe – I have no idea what they think they are talking about but it’s very cute.

Fun with mummy
He winds me up every day, and then he melts my heart when he says ‘I ruv you mummy’. My Toby-Bear, my T-dog,my Super-T, my Toby-tobleroney, my baby.

Now you are three.

Looking forward to forty

Yes you read that right. I’m looking forward to being forty. It’s still a few years off yet (2018 to be exact) but there are several reasons I’m looking forward to forty. It’s not the age as such that I’m looking forward too, more where my life will (hopefully) be in three years time…

Looking forward to forty

We’re currently in the process of trying to relocate from Scotland down to England to be nearer both mine and Barry’s parents. Hopefully within the next six months or so we’ll have moved so in three years time my boys probably won’t remember a time when they didn’t see their grandparents every week or two, rather than only a few times a year like they get at the moment.

We viewed some houses just last week and we think we’ve found one we’d like to buy. It needs quite a lot doing to it in terms of decoration, plus it has potential to extend or remodel in the future but all that will take time, so it’s another thing that hopefully in three years we’ll be living in a house (even if it’s not that one) that is decorated to our taste and works well for our family.

Of course moving nearer to my parents has the added benefit of providing us with babysitters much closer to home. So in three years time I’ll be able to enjoy the odd night out, or even away, with my husband. We’ve only had one night away from Toby since he was born – that was back at Easter this year, and in fact that was the last time we went out as a couple at all!

The other thing I’m looking forward to is that the boys will be 5 and 3 by the time I’m 40 and hopefully a bit easier to manage. I know there will be different challenges as they get older but just things like being able to go on holiday, or even out for the day without having to take seemingly the entire contents of our house with us will be amazing. At the moment, with buggies, travel cots, nappies and everything else there’s barely room for us in the car! There’s also the fact that we’ll be able to go on holiday to places where the kids are old enough to join in with activities (and go to kids’ clubs giving us a bit of a break too!) and hopefully they’ll find it exciting going away and sleeping somewhere different rather than freaking out. The last holiday we attempted we abandoned after one night because Toby screamed his head off every time we tried to get him anywhere near the bed he was supposed to be sleeping in. (To be fair that’s better already – he slept in a double bed at my parents’ house last week and was been absolute fine).

Work-wise I don’t really know where I’ll be in three years time, or where I want to be. I can’t really see myself going back to full time teaching but you never know. I’d love to set up my own business teaching French and Spanish to pre-schoolers, and maybe doing some tutoring as well but I need to look into it in more detail and see if there’s actually a demand for it in the area we’re planning on moving to. If I do go back to teaching in a school, even part time, then Toby will be at school and Gabe at pre-school so we won’t have anywhere near the childcare costs we’ll have if I go back to work at the end of my maternity leave.

So although I don’t want to wish my life away, and I know I should make the most of these baby days with Gabe, especially because we’re not planning on having any more babies, I’m still very much looking forward to forty. Are you looking forward to being a particular age, or time in the future? Or are you happy with where you are now?

Let's Talk Mommy

Toby is two years old!

Two years old! How on earth did we get here? My baby is well and truly a toddler now and yet I can remember his birth as if it was yesterday.

We had a lovely day on Saturday for Toby’s birthday. All four of his grandparents came up from England and my friends Claire and Dave came round with their twins who are three months younger than Toby. It was the same people we had there for his birthday last year and everyone was saying that it didn’t seem like a year had passed!

We didn’t actually get Toby many presents. He is still only two after all and I’d rather hold off on loads of presents until he is old enough to understand what is going on. I knew he would be getting plenty of things from friends and relatives too so our present to him was really trying to make sure he had a fun day (and we’ve also booked to go and see In The Night Garden Live in September which will be a birthday treat!).

Everyone came round in the morning and although the boys were all a little shy at first they soon got stuck in to playing with all Toby’s toys. His new Duplo from his uncle and auntie was definitely a hit (as much with my dad as the kids I think) but as predicted Toby was most enjoying his massive number 2 helium balloon!

We had a buffet lunch which the boys all seemed to enjoy eating on the living room floor.

And then it was time for the big reveal of the rainbow cake that I had spent most of the previous day baking. I was pleased with how it looked from the outside but until I cut into it I wasn’t really sure how it was going to have turned out. Thankfully it looked awesome!

Rainbow cake

I was very happy with it, and everyone else seemed suitably impressed. It might have cost me over £25 for the ingredients (mostly because I had to buy all the different food colours which were £2.80 a pot) but I reckon it was worth it. It tasted pretty good too! Toby was a bit confused by the candles at first but he always blows on things if you tell him they are hot so we explained the candles were hot and he managed to blow them out eventually (with a bit of help from me!).

We split one slice of cake between all three boys and they soon got stuck in, although even that was a bit too much for Toby in the end. He definitely seemed to be enjoying it though.

After Claire, Dave and the twins had gone home we got out Toby’s present from his Grandma and Grandad; a new slide for the garden! Toby loves the slide and spent ages just going up and down. Hopefully he’ll get plenty of use out of it this summer.

After playing for a while in the garden we came back in and Toby had fun playing with a couple of the new toys his Nana had got him too. He loved the magnetic fishing game, and the Magnadoodle has been a definite hit too.

Everyone else headed home about four o’clock and after some tea we took Toby up to bed – he was fast asleep within minutes! He did so well throughout the day, and without a nap too! He’s not always great with lots of people around, and it can take him a little while to get used to seeing his grandparents with not getting to see them that often but he was brilliant all day really. He’s definitely growing up fast. He’s got lots of words now, and seems to learn new ones every day. We’ve still got a way to go before he can really communicate properly but we’re getting closer and closer. I’m sure the next year will fly by again and it won’t be long before I’m saying ‘Toby is three – how did that happen??’

37? How the hell did that happen??

37

Today is my 37th birthday. Three years off 40 and I really don’t know where the last 10 years have gone!

I spent the first half of my 20s mostly living and working in France.  When I was 25 I moved to Scotland but continued to live the party life, out drinking every weekend and spending most of my Saturdays and Sundays recovering from hangovers. I honestly forgot how old I was for a while and was convinced I was 26 for two years. When I turned 28 I had to sit and actually work it out to make sure I was right!

I was quite happy turning 30. I owned my own flat, had a half decent job, and plenty of friends around me. I did have a bit of a niggling feeling that my life wasn’t really going anywhere though. I had been single for 7 years. Although I quite enjoyed my job it didn’t pay especially well and there were few prospects for promotion. I took the plunge and left my job for an even lowered paid one but doing something completely different and where there seemed to be more opportunities for career progression. But after 18 months working for one of the major high street banks the crash happened and suddenly my prospects didn’t look so good.

So I decided to take an even bigger leap and do something I had thought about since I was at school. I resigned from my job at the bank and took up a place on a PGDE teacher training course. Thanks to a very generous loan from my dad I didn’t work for a year but instead completed my training to be a French teacher. And that was when everything about my life changed.

As well as doing my teacher training I lost three stone in weight and then feeling much happier in my own skin, I took a trip to London when I had finished my course where I met the man who was going to become my husband.

When we met I had just turned 32. Barry is the same age as me and we had both been single for a long time. To be honest I had resigned myself to a life on my own, where the children I had always imagined having didn’t exist.

But just 8 months after we first met Barry moved to Scotland to live with me. Three months later he proposed, another three months after that we had bought our first house together. A year after getting engaged we were married and six months after that I was pregnant.

Now, I’ve been a teacher for five years, happily married for three, Toby is going to be two in a few months and a few short weeks after that our second baby boy will join our family.

And despite all that, I don’t know where the last 10 years have gone, I still feel like I should be 27 not 37! Heading towards 40 doesn’t scare me though – in fact I think my 40s are going to be awesome. Our boys will be 5 and 3 and hopefully the real adventures of our life as a family will just be beginning.

Sarah is 36 years old!

Sarahs 30th Birthday

It’s my birthday, it’s my birthday and I’m going to party like it’s my birthday! Well, I’m not exactly going to party seeing as I have a ten and a half month old baby, but I did go to a Harvester for my tea last night so I could claim my free birthday ice-cream sundae, and tonight Barry’s going to get me a Krispy Creme donut on his way home from work. Oh and I had a glass of wine last night too, so you know I’m living the high life right here!

In all honesty I’m really not that bothered about birthdays these days. I still can’t believe that I’m nearer to 40 than I am to 30. I still forget how old I am quite regularly and have been doing since I was about 25. In fact I honest to goodness thought I was 26 for two years and got a massive shock when I realised I was turning 28 not 27 (again!). I don’t feel old (I know I’m not actually old!) and most of my friends are around the same age as me. I really don’t think age is important, as long as you can do what you want to do, who cares how old you are? Although since I started rehearsals for Aida (the musical I’m going to be in in October) I have been feeling my age somewhat, as half the other dancers are girls literally 20 years younger than me!

The only other time recently that I have considered my age was after I first met Barry and we talked about getting married and having kids. I was 32 when we met (and he was 31 – he’s just over 3 months younger than me). We knew quite early in our relationship that it was serious and that we wanted children. And that was the time I was aware that we should probably get on with if we did, especially if we wanted more than one child. The thing with trying for a baby is that no-one knows how long it might take, so we didn’t want to leave it too long before we started trying.  And so we got engaged just under a year after we met, got married a year after that, and four months later started trying. As it happened I got pregnant in two months but we didn’t know that was going to happen, it could have taken years for all we knew! My mum was almost 36 when she had me and she’s never seemed ‘old’ to me even though she was older than a lot of my friends’ mums. I always said I wanted to have kids before I got to 36 too, and I did it! (Although if you’d have asked me four years ago if I thought it would happen I never would have believed you).

So there we are, I’m 36 years old. Happy Birthday to me! And Happy Birthday to my brother for tomorrow too – he’s exactly two years older than me, my mum and dad planned to have their kids two years apart but I don’t think they thought they would get it that close – and actually we were supposed to be about three weeks apart but he was early and I was late and we ended up with birthdays right next to each other. When we were little he used to open his presents on my birthday because he couldn’t understand how my birthday could be first if he was older than me (and he got away with that one until he was about 13 and I started arguing that if he was opening his presents a day early then I would too!). Happy Birthday our kid!

(The photo is from my 30th birthday in case you were wondering – I couldn’t find one from a more recent birthday!)
