Remembering Childhood // Twinderelmo

It’s that time of week when another blogger is going to be sharing their childhood memories. This week’s Remembering Childhood comes from Beth at Twinderelmo.

Which decade were you born in?

The 1980s

What is your earliest memory? How old were you?

I was about three and quite morbidly it was when our pet dog passed away. I don’t remember him dying or anything – just that the vet reversed onto our drive. This was MAJOR as no one ever ever ever reversed into our drive! Bizarre.

What was your favourite toy at 5 years old? At 10?

At 5 I had my cuddly Sylvester from the Loony Tunes who I took absolutely everywhere. At 10 I probably was obsessed with a Tamogotchi! I remember my Dad got me one when he was working in Ireland and my whole class was jealous.

Do you still have any toys from your childhood?

I still have Sylvester. He’s very ragged and battered but still in one piece! My kids have had various teddies and books my Mom squirrelled away.

Who was your favourite pop group/artist as a teenager?

Boyzone were the first band I was mad on. I went to see them in concert at Wolverhampton Civic with my teenage sister. As a teenager I was obsessed with Craig David, I thought I was going to marry him!

What was your favourite TV show(s)?

As a little kid I was mad on Rainbow! I had Zippy and George teddies which I loved. As I got older we got Sky and I became addicted to Sister Sister. The irony now that I have identical twin daughters!

What was the first film you remember seeing at the cinema?

Jurassic Park. I remember going to the main cinema in a different town at night and they’d got huge dinosaurs on the roof. I remember vividly thinking it was like being at a film premier as it was dark and there were loads of lights. Hated the film itself though!

Do you have any dodgy haircut/ outfit memories that you’d rather forget?

Yes yes yes. My hair is so bushy so having it cut very short when straighteners weren’t commercial – arghhh. I also spent years donning Adidas tracksuits and many pairs of “poppers”

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A teacher. I used to buy empty exercise books and set my teddies homework. I still think I should have become one as I just love kids.

If you could go back to being a child again what age would you choose and why?

Probably about 9. We went on our first major holiday on an aeroplane when I was 9 and I remember thinking how amazing it all was. Being 9 was such a cool age – why do we ever have to grow up?!

Thanks for sharing your memories Beth – I absolutely loved Rainbow when I was little too!
