Remembering Childhood // Wafflemama

It’s that time of week when another blogger is going to be sharing their childhood memories. This week’s Remembering Childhood comes from Laura at Wafflemama.

Which decade were you born in?

I’m an 80s baby!

What is your earliest memory? How old were you?

My earliest memory I think is when I was 3 going to look at a new house and then at nursery school, telling my nursery teacher we had just moved house and my Mum laughing saying actually it was a few months ago.

What was your favourite toy at 5 years old? At 10?

At 5 years old probably my Popples toy, it was purple and I loved it! At 10 it was probably the fashion wheel that I borrowed off a girl up the road. I should probably have given it back by now!

Do you still have any toys from your childhood?

I have a Mr. T doll but sadly the plastic is old now and my son broke his arm off recently. He’s also lost his clothes so he’s not looking his best. I think my Mum still has a few things too but I’m yet to find out what. I really hope she still has my Sylvanian families.

Who was your favourite pop group/artist as a teenager?

As a younger kid I loved East 17 and Backstreet Boys! I always chose the ‘ugly’ one in the hope nobody else would like them and they’d marry me – ha! As a teenager I got into more rock music and probably was mostly obsessed with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

What was your favourite TV show(s)?

This is tough, there were so many amazing shows on as a kid! I loved Superted and the Raggydolls, then later on it was things like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Sister Sister.

What was the first film you remember seeing at the cinema?

I only ever remember seeing Cool Runnings at the cinema with my parents, I must have gone before then but my memory is hopeless.

Do you have any dodgy haircut/ outfit memories that you’d rather forget?

Oh god yes. Not so much haircuts as my Mum was quite sensible and never let me cut it off. She did crimp it to death though and I remember being told I looked like a Christmas tree! Outfit wise my worst memory as a pretty tubby child was the school fashion show. I had a skirt made of bin bags and a baseball cap, I can see it in my head it was just horrific!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I never really knew to be honest but I remember thinking I’d love to be a vet as I’ve always loved animals.

If you could go back to being a child again what age would you choose and why?

I would probably go back to being either at nursery as I loved the bottles of milk, painting and storytime. Otherwise probably about 8 or 9 where I had a few lovely friends and nice memories. Having said that it would be so different now at that age so I think the younger the better!

Thanks for sharing your memories Laura – I love that you still have a Mr T doll, even if he is missing an arm now!
