Remembering Childhood // Vie Choufleur

It’s that time of week when another blogger is going to be sharing their childhood memories. This week it’s from Halina from Vie Choufleur.

Which decade were you born in?
The 1980s
What is your earliest memory? How old were you?

I think I was either a very late 2 or a very early 3. I was playing on my tricycle (do they even make those anymore?!) in our back garden and with the brilliantly stubborn logic of a toddler decided to try to ride said tricycle UP the steps towards the back door. Needless to say that didn’t go particularly well and I fell off.

What was your favourite toy at 5 years old? At 10?

It’s hard to remember being 5. At 10 my favourite toy was probably most likely one of my Barbies…yep, I was a Barbie girl! I had SO many, although my favourite was the mermaid Barbie who came with hair down to her ankles. At 5…I remember adoring my Lego, so so much. I used to play Lego for HOURS. I can’t wait until my son is old enough to do that (because I’ll be joining in/taking it over…).

Do you still have any toys from your childhood?

I still have some soft animals, but unfortunately my parents are the very opposite of hoarders and threw out all of my toys as I got older. I’m still sore about that now, and it probably contributes to my own compulsion to keep my son’s toys in the attic.

Who was your favourite pop group/artist as a teenager?

I immediately leapt to yell THE SPICE GIRLS!!! but actually, thinking about it, I was only 11 when they came out, and by the time I hit my teens they were pretty much Over. I loved Britney as an early teen, obviously. And Robbie Williams, oh I LOVED him for a while. Sugababes (the original/2nd incarnation only) were definitely in there too. Although to be fair, my main favourite music as a teenager was the band Muse, who I don’t think fall into the pop category.

What was your favourite TV show(s)?

BUFFY. I worshipped Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I still do! Watching it now, you really realise just how far ahead of its time it was, and how brilliantly it was written. Such a strong, empowered female character taking charge of her own life was a rarity in the late 90s/early 00s.

What was the first film you remember seeing at the cinema?

Aladdin! Oh, Robin Williams 🙁

Do you have any dodgy haircut/ outfit memories that you’d rather forget?
For my first school disco at high school my parents insisted on choosing me an outfit. I ended up going dressed like some kind of 40 year old virgin in a black calf-length shift dress with a red cardigan. My cheeks burn a bit when I remember that. But I had NO idea about fashion at all growing up, so most likely everything I ever wore was hideous.
What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a writer. Sometimes it would change (for a while in my teens I wanted to be a vicar, and sometimes I wanted to go into academia) but normally I would return to a writer, in any shape or form. It’s a shame that I never had the conviction in myself to pursue that dream.

If you could go back to being a child again what age would you choose and why?

I would never, ever want to re-live my teenage years. Being a teenager is something that everybody should only have to suffer the once. And I was desperately lonely as a child, so going back to pre-teens isn’t something that would appeal to me either. Sometimes I wonder if I’d like to return to an 18/19 year old, to make different and better choices about my life path. But, then I most likely wouldn’t have met my husband, and I wouldn’t have my son. And my son is my world. So I honestly can’t say I would ever go back.

Thank you for sharing your childhood memories Halina – mermaid Barbie sounds awesome!
