Remembering Childhood // Pondering Parenthood

It’s that time of week when another blogger is going to be sharing their childhood memories. This week it’s Jules from Pondering Parenthood.

Which decade were you born in?

1980s

What is your earliest memory? How old were you?

I think my earliest memory is my aunt and uncle’s wedding. I was five, and wore a peach dress with puffy sleeves and loose ribbons, borrowed from a friend. My only memory of the day is my gran being helped down some steps to a car; I think I was worried she would fall. I vaguely remember a conga line from the reception too!

What was your favourite toy at 5 years old? At 10?

I think my favourite toy at both ages would have been my green bear, imaginatively named Green Ted. I think my dad won him at a fairground when I was small and I couldn’t sleep without him there.

Do you still have any toys from your childhood?

I think Green Ted is safely stored away at my parents’ house! I can’t think of anything that I still have, but my mum has started to get some of my old toys out of the loft now that my baby girl is getting to the age that she can play with them. So I’m sure my answer to this question will change in future!

Who was your favourite pop group/artist as a teenager?

Ooh, I had really eclectic taste as a teenager. My listening ranged from S Club 7 to Green Day with a bit of Savage Garden thrown in! I remember tape recording the Top 40 of the radio so I suppose pop was my main interest.

What was your favourite TV show(s)?

Hmm. As a child I remember loving the Fraggle Rock theme tune but lost interest pretty quickly once the programme actually started. I LOVED Fun House and always dreamed of being a contestant. Or one of the twins!

What was the first film you remember seeing at the cinema?

The first film I saw with my mum was The Flintstones. This was a momentous occasion as neither of my parents enjoy going to the cinema. In fact, I can’t remember having been with either of them since!

Do you have any dodgy haircut/ outfit memories that you’d rather forget?

I had a terrible fringe cut in when I was eleven. I’m not sure what the hairdresser was thinking. I have a really small forehead and coupled with braces and round, gold-rimmed glasses it was NOT a good look! Thankfully my parents relented and let me get contact lenses at fifteen. It was like being reborn!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I was adamant that I would be a barrister, right up until I went to sixth form and decided it would be too much of a heavy workload and I knew I wanted to have a family. Ironically I became a teacher and regularly worked a 60-hour week!

If you could go back to being a child again what age would you choose and why?

Oooh, I think seven. My mum had been quite ill up to this time but had a kidney transplant, which made a huge difference to the whole family as prior to this our lives has been dictated by her dialysis. I loved my last year of first school before all the complications of friendship drama in high school. I wouldn’t want to have to live through the teenage years again though!

Thanks Jules for sharing your childhood memories – I bet everyone who grew up in the 80s could probably still sing the Fraggle Rock theme tune!

If you enjoyed this post then please do come back next week when another blogger will be remembering their childhood.
